Gate photocells use an infrared beam between a transmitter and receiver—or a reflected beam in some designs—to detect an obstruction in a protected area and signal the gate control board.

Photocells are a common part of automatic gate safety, but they do not remove every possible crushing, shearing or trapping risk. Their position, wiring, programming and regular testing must suit the gate movement and site risk assessment.

How Gate Photocells Work

A typical pair has a transmitting unit on one side of the entrance and a receiving unit on the other. When the beam is interrupted, the receiver changes its output to the control board. The programmed response may stop, prevent or reverse movement depending on the input and operating direction.

Where Photocells Are Installed

Control boards may support different contact logic. Safety wiring must follow the exact controller and photocell instructions. Monitored systems may test the sensor circuit before movement and should not be replaced with an incompatible unmonitored connection.

  • Transmitter and receiver out of alignment
  • Loose, damaged or water-affected wiring
  • Incorrect voltage or contact configuration
  • Sunlight or environmental interference on unsuitable equipment

Why a Gate May Open but Not Close

Many systems give closing photocells priority. If the control board believes the beam is blocked or the circuit has failed, it may prevent closing or reverse immediately. Check the entrance, clean the covers and arrange diagnosis if the fault continues.

Maintenance and Testing

Keep covers clean, inspect mounting stability and test the system response using the approved procedure. Do not permanently bridge or disable the input to keep the gate working. A technician should confirm alignment, voltage, wiring and controller logic.

Photocells Are Part of a Wider Safety System

Depending on the gate, additional protection may include safety edges, guarded clearances, force limitation, warning lights, vehicle detection and controlled operating modes. The complete installation should address all identified hazards.
